Anna

I created Anna as a response to Bryce Kanbara’s semi-annual Whirlygig prompt (a whirlygig is a wind powered sculpture). Anna measures the wind speed in the gallery using an anemometer.

Anna sends the wind speed data to the Feather HUZZAH chip inside an old coffee tin. The feather intermittently forwards the current wind speed over wifi to a Cloudflare Worker, where the latest wind speed is stored as a Durable Object.

Visitors can scan Anna’s QR code to be taken to a page where their webcam is activated with permission, as part of the experience. Visitors’ selfies are made to spin at a rate that is tied to the wind speed, as fetched intermittently from Cloudflare.

Scan the QR Code, or click the button to try the Anna experience.

Spin Me Round

Incidentally while making this piece, I played several time the original version of “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” released in 1985 by the English pop band Dead or Alive.
